The importance of superfoods

Superfoods are rich in vitamins, minerals, fiber, antioxidants and other ingredients that benefit our health. Some of these superfoods are: berries (blueberries, goji), garlic, green tea, pomegranate, cocoa, cinnamon, artichoke, reishi, linseed and Kozani’s saffron. Foods established as superfoods are considered superior in their nutritional value compared to others. Superfoods have undergone clinical trials in order to confirm their beneficial effects in specific clinical situations. For example, there is an indication that:

 

Cranberry can reduce the incidence of urinary tract infections or the bacterial urine population

• garlic (allylin) can significantly reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension

• Cinnamon is beneficial to pre-diabetic patients.

 

Hippocrates, the "father of medicine", argued that "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food."

 

The consumption of food of natural origin rich in antioxidants is very important, as the nutritional value of many foods has decreased due to the fact that are subject to processing. Western influences on eating habits, the environmental pollution, the food preservation methods and the overburdened daily schedule are some of the factors that our diet is not as good as it used to be. The more natural the food is, the more easily it is absorbed and metabolized by the body.
